Brief History Of Bombay Psychological Association
The Bombay Psychological Association (B.P.A.) was established in 1945 as a semi-academic and professional body by the following ten founder members:
Dr. K. A. Lalkaka, Dr. J. C. Marfatia, Shri A. A. Khatri, Shri R. J. Shah, Mrs. K. A. J. Lalkaka, Shri G. S. Roashan, Shri R. J. Chinawala, Shri B. N. Agarwal, Miss N. N. Nanji and Dr. H. P. Mehta.
The first managing committee had the following office bearers:
Dr. Lalkaka-(President), Dr. J. C. Marfatia-(Vice-President), Shri A. A. Khatri and R. J Shah- (Joint-Secretaries) and Shri B. N. Agarwal-(Treasurer).
The B.P.A Was registered as a social body in 1956 under the Societies Registration Act of 1860. The 1945 constitution of the B.P.A. and memorandum of the association was amended in 1956 and in 1976.
The first conference of BPA was conducted on 7th and 8th February, 1948 at Wilson College, Chowpatty, Mumbai. It was an attempt to bring all the fraternity of psychologists in India together on a joint platform. In line with its objective to conduct and publish books, journals and to promote the study and knowledge of psychology, the idea of starting a journal devoted to psychological research and discussion was mooted in the very first meeting of the B.P.A. However it had to wait for thirty-four years to realize it. Bombay Psychologist started its publication on 28th October, 1978.
